Tottenham v Arsenal: How and when did the North London Derby rivalry begin?

One of the fiercest rivalries in modern football, Arsenal and Tottenham’s history goes back to the 1920s.

Both the clubs are based out of North London as the stadiums are just 4 miles away from each other. From fighting for avoiding relegations to challenging for the first division title, Arsenal and Tottenham fans have seen it all. The bitter-sweet relationship between the two clubs is a part of the football heritage present.

Second World War: After the Highbury stadium was bombed destroying the south end of the stadium. During this crisis, Arsenal played all their home matches at White Heart Lane which is home to their local rivals.

The Spurs beat Arsenal 5-1 in 2008 to win the league cup. It was the first time since 1999 that Spurs managed to beat the Gunners in any competition. Spurs also won the 1991 FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal on the 14th of April. Spurs fans call it St. Hotspurs day.

It was a one-sided rivalry between the two clubs during the 1990s as Arsenal were playing beautiful football completely dominating every match that they played against the Spurs.

Starting in 2002, Arsenal fans started celebrating St. Totteringham’s day on the day when it was mathematically impossible for Spurs to finish above Arsenal in the Premier League. Ironically, Spurs have finished above Arsenal in recent years canceling the celebrations.

As time has passed, both the clubs have set domination in English football in their own way. Although, Arsenal still has more silverware in recent years.
