Rafael Nadal snaps at reporters for constant retirement inquiries

Rafael Nadal recorded his best-ever start to a season in 2022 with 20 consecutive wins. In the 2023 season, he has recorded his worst-ever with defeats in his first two matches.

Nadal started his 2023 season at the United Cup against fellow southpaw Cameron Norrie. The Briton secured his first win over a Top-3 player as he beat Nadal 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In his second match against Alex de Minaur, it was a similar story. Nadal failed to capitalise after winning the first set. de Minaur won the tie 3-6, 6-1, 7-5. The defeat against Australia meant Spain was out of the tournament.

With Nadal suffering multiple injuries in the 2022 season that hampered his season, doubts on his fitness came to fore again. They also brought along the retirement questions during the press conference and Nadal eventually snapped.

Addressing the press after the defeat to Norrie, Nadal took a sarcastic tone and said, "Every time that I am coming to a press conference, it seems I have to retire. When it's time, I will let you know. Stop asking about retirement because I'm here to keep playing tennis."

The 22-time Grand Slam champion losing his cool in a press conference was a rare occasion. However, it was needed nevertheless as retirement questions after just the first match could be demoralizing and annoying to any player.

Nadal hasn't signed up for any Tour event going ahead and will return to action at the 2023 Australian Open directly. He is this year's defending champion eyeing his record-extending 23rd major and 3rd Australian Open title.
