World No.7 Alexander Zverev ended his 2020 season with a defeat against Novak Djokovic at the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals. The German was aiming at becoming the first player in tournament history to beat a World No.1 in three consecutive editions. The US Open 2020 finalist ended his year with two titles in Cologne and a win/loss ratio of 28/11.

Zverev lost his first match at the Finals against Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, however, he bounced back against Diego Schwartzman to stay in contention for the semifinals.

He entered Friday’s all-important match against Djokovic, hoping to create a major upset, however, he fell flat against Djokovic. He looked distracted and his shots weren’t on the point throughout the match.

Zverev reached the finals of US Open and ATP Paris Masters, failing to win either. His performance at London was another example of the German’s inability to perform under pressure.

“It was a great year. Unfortunately, I lost a lot of big matches… I lost [in the] semi-finals in Australia, which I could have won. I lost the final of the US Open which I should have won, kind of. [I lost the] final in Paris-Bercy. This match here,” said Zverev.

Zverev acknowledged his failures this year but hopes to come back strong in 2021.

“A lot of tough matches, a lot of tough moments, but a good year for me. A lot to build on for next year,” Zverev concluded.
