After a whole host of unsavory incidents off the court in 2020, the year 2021 is finally shaping up the way Zverev must have wanted it. He beat Italian Matteo Berrettini in the Finals, 6-7 6-4 6-3. This victory would have been made more special by the fact that he had a tough route to the Final, and he even had to beat Rafael Nadal along the way. This was also his second consecutive victory over Nadal. Zverev who is a controversial figure back home in Germany will next be seen competing at the Masters event on the clay courts of Rome

After a trophy win, especially a masters thousand tournament a tennis player should expect questions from the journalists of his country. But, at the Madrid Masters, there were no questions for Alexander Zverev in German. Maybe the German media were not really expecting Zverev to win against Nadal or there is also the factor of tennis not being as popular as other sports like football in Germany, but the incident did upset Zverev.

The Italian media who were present there tried to light up the mood by claiming that they are interested in the German and would love for him to have an Italian passport. But, the German said he would not make a comment on that. Alexander Zverev said, “None? I just won a Masters and there’s none in German? As you see, the Germans really don’t care.”
