If he could curb his enthusiasm to get a yellow card or red card, David Luiz can consistently be a good defender and be mentioned in the bracket of John Terry, Nemanja Vidic and Virgil van Dijk (Photo by Matt McNulty – Manchester City/Manchester City FC via Getty Images)

The Brazilian centre-back was signed by Arsenal last season and since then has accumulated a lot of game time under Unai Emery and his replacement Mikel Arteta. Despite the common horrifying mistakes he makes from time to time, David Luiz has proved to be a somewhat solid defender under Mikel Arteta. Now it seems that the Brazilian will get to stay with the Gunners for one more year.

Consistency and reliability hasn’t been his strong suits, but he is a good defender

He has a knack for taking an early yellow card and thus hindering his ability to go for hard tackles in the latter stage of the game, and the foul he commits to get the yellow card is funny and frustrating at best. For example, his tugging of Mohamed Salah’s shirt at Anfield in the 2019/20 Premier League season led him to getting a yellow card. With that he was targeted consistently and had to avoid doing any untoward mistakes in order to not be sent off. Mohamed Salah turned him inside out and then sprinted so many yards and scored the third goal of the match and David Luiz could do nothing to stop him.

Despite his shortcomings, David Luiz is fairly a great defender during his good times, as evidenced by the times he has played for. You cannot be a bad player and play for Chelsea alongside John Terry and at Paris Saint-Germain with Thiago Silva. His 30 yard free kick goal against Colombia brings back many memories for his fans. Now at Arsenal, reports have risen that he will be offered a new one year contract extension since his contract gets over at the end of this season. Under Mikel Arteta, David Luiz has been a fairly good defender and has been an experienced figure in the youthful camp.
