Olympic champion Elaine Hera Thompson ran her first outdoors race of the season at the Golden Games in Walnut, California, clocking an incredible 10.89 seconds. This time is the best time for women’s 100mt run in 2022.
The Jamaican won her semi-final in what is her first outdoor 100mts of the season. She did, however, opt-out of the final, with no apparent explanation for doing so. The final was instead won by America’s Twanisha Terry with an impressive 10.77 seconds. Second and third place was secured by America’s Aelia Hobbs and Gabby Thomas, who ran with favourable wind timings of 3.3 m/s.

Thompson took to Twitter after the run, sharing a picture of her at the stadium and captioning it ‘Feels good to be back. Season opener 10:89’.The 29-year-old became the first woman to win back to back Olympic sprint doubles where she retained her 100 and 200mts titles at the Tokyo Olympics as well as a memorable gold in the 4 x 100mts relay.
Gabby Thomas, who secured third place in the 100mts, set the fastest time of the season in the 200mts event, which is her preferred distance. Thomas, who is also an Olympic bronze medallist in the event, won in 22.02 seconds, while her teammate, Fred Kerley won the men’s equivalent in 19.80 seconds.
World 100mts champion Christian Coleman who is making his return to the world of track and field this season after a 18 month ban suspension for not complying with anti-doping allegations made about him, was announced at the start of the 200mts race but did not run it. American runner Micah Williams won the men’s 100m with a phenomenal 9.83 seconds. Only Puerto Rican athlete Jasmine Camacho-Quinn, defending Olympic gold medallist at 100mts ran faster this year.
