“India will miss him” – Neeraj Chopra to miss 2022 Commonwealth Games due to groin injury

Fitness concerns prevented Olympic Games javelin champion, Neeraj Chopra, from further participating.

India’s Golden Boy, Neeraj Chopra will not be seen soaring at Birmingham 2022 due to his groin injury which he suffered at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, USA. The Olympic champion has been advised a month’s rest to recover from the injury, which means he will not be able to make up for the Commonwealth Games 2022. The Commonwealth Games will be taking place from 28 July to 8 August.

Neeraj gave his 100 percent in his fourth attempt at World Athletics and achieved an 88.13m throw which put him in the second position. He suffered a minor injury while participating in the World Athletics Championships Oregon 22 in Eugene on Sunday. After an MRI scan on Monday, it was clear that the javelin thrower won’t be in his best condition to perform.

Huge setback for India as Neeraj Chopra misses out

This will be a huge setback for India at CWG22 as India’s one of the brightest medal prospects has been ruled out, as per sports.ndtv.com. The whole of India who would cheer him, are going to miss him at the upcoming event. Also, this was a chance for Neeraj to take sweet revenge against the world champion Anderson Peters who defeated Neeraj to bag gold at the world athletics championship. Neeraj has won the battle with Peters twice this year at Kuortane and Paavo Nurmi games.

“Our Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra will not be defending his title at Birmingham 2022 due to concerns regarding his fitness. We wish him a speedy recovery & are supporting him in these challenging times” said IOA’s Twitter account. “I did feel a bit on my thigh after the fourth effort. I couldn’t put in that much effort and strapped my thigh. I will know by morning how it feels or if it’s something to worry about”, Neeraj said about his Injury. Neeraj couldn’t put much effort after the injury and attempted two foul throws in his fifth and sixth attempt and settled for a historic silver.

Adille Sumariwalla, the President of the Athletics Federation of India, noted that Neeraj Chopra had requested AFI to inform the Indian Olympic Association about his decision to be sidelined as the flag bearer of the Indian contingent in Birmingham. Mr. Sumariwalla commented, “Neeraj has said that since he is not 100 percent fit to compete at the Commonwealth Games, he would not be the flag bearer of the Indian contingent at the athletes’ parade in the opening ceremony”.

According to the AFI press release, Mr. Sumariwalla further said, “Neeraj appeared to be struggling on Sunday during the finals at the World Championships. We are in constant touch with him to assist his recovery.” The fans are waiting eagerly to see Neeraj in the race soon again. All prayers are with him to get better soon.
