The incident occurred in Mount Hope when Hart tried to stop a group of men fighting outside in the car park, just four days before his 30th birthday. Reportedly, one of the men went out of the parking lot, and took a gun out of his car before shooting Hart in the chest and driving off.

The suspect was later arrested and taken into police custody. The sprinter was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. “The Olympic family is saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Shavez Hart, a proud native of Abaco,” the Bahamas Olympic Committee said in a statement. The Olympian held several medals, including a gold in the 4×100 relay at the Central American and Caribbean Championships.
