A Major upset In Copa Del Rey

Atletico players react after missing a chance

Atletico were toothless in attack despite having 15 shots but none were on target. Diego Simeone’s men were down to 10 men in the 2nd half after Ricard Sanchez was sent off.

Simeone set out a strong lineup for the match, with Felix and Correa both starting up front. In midfield, Lucas Torreira had a rare start, alongside Saul, Kondogbia and Vitolo. Diego Simeone had indicated he would not take his opponents lightly before the match.

Gimenez, who was booked for his troubles, off the pitch receiving treatment, Cornella added insult to injury. Agus Medina’s cross was flicked home expertly by Jimenez to give the hosts an unexpected lead.

Though Atletico were seeing over 60 per cent possession, they would have been 2-0 down heading into the break if not for Miguel San Roman’s save from Pablo Fernandez.

Cornella were clearly the better team and could have won by a greater margin if not for missed chances. It’s a match which will be remembered in Cornella’s history for a very long time. The 3rd division team has shown immense character to defeat strong firing Atletico who are currently 1st in La Liga.
