ATP Awards 2020: A deep dive into the nominees for the ‘Newcomer of the Year’ Award

With the conclusion of the latest season of tennis, the last few rites are yet to take place. The nominees of 2020 ATP Awards have been announced. These include all player-voted categories:-

  1. Comeback Player of the Year
  2. Most Improved Player of the Year
  3. Newcomer of the Year
  4. Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award
  5. Coach of the Year

Nominations for ‘Newcomer of the Year’ are based on the advancement of a Next Gen ATP player who broke into the Top-100 or Top-150 for the first time. Also, it includes who made the biggest impact on the ATP Tour this season. 

A look at the nominees for ‘Newcomer of the Year’

Carlos Alcaraz, Emil Ruusivuori, Thiago Seyboth Wild

Carlos Alcaraz is a 17-year-old Spaniard who now ranks at 140 in the charts. Further, he made his ATP main draw debut at the Rio Open this year. 

The World No.114, Sebastian Korda is perhaps one of the most recognisable names on this list. The American made the headlines due to his admiration for Rafael Nadal. However, the 20-year-old reaped an astounding result when he reached the fourth round of the French Open.

18-year-old Lorenzo Musetti made his ATP main draw debut as well. The World No.128’s highlight came about when he downed the 3-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka in straight sets at Rome Masters.

Austria’s Jurji Rodionov is now ranked at 142 in the charts. The 21-year-old advanced to the second round of the French Open for the first time in his career.

Emil Ruusivuori is a 21-year-old Finnish sensation. He reached the second round at both, the U.S Open and the French Open this year. Further, Emil has broken through into the Top-100 and is now the World No.86.

The Brazilian, Thiago Seyboth Wild, is currently the World No.115. With it, Wild is the second-highest ranked tennis player in Brazil. Moreover, he lifted the ATP 250 title at Chile Open

The winners of the award will be revealed later this month. Not only that, fans can vote for their favourite singles player and doubles team through December 11.
