The 33-year-old walks into this match high on confidence after playing a handful of matches on clay this season. Ramos made the finals of Cordoba and the semis of Buenos Aires (both clay) in February and March this year. Although he lost early in Monaco, he made the third round in Barcelona last week, where he lost to the form player, Andrey Rublev. For the year, the younger Spaniard has played 16 matches on the dirt with 11 wins.

On the other hand, the 37-year-old has pretty much nothing to show for the year. With just one match on the hard court under his belt, the senior Spaniard is likely to struggle in this match. Even in 2020, Verdasco played mostly the lower clay court tournaments with premature exits. However, Verdasco can only hope his experience of playing on the surface over the years can help him salvage some pride in this match.

These two have met each other on nine occasions on the tour, with Verdasco just leading by 5-4. Also, they have met on the clay six times. On this surface though, Ramos leads 4-2. Their first meeting dates back to 2012 in Brazil, while the previous one came in Gstaad in 2019. Interestingly, all their contests have been two sets affair, but for the one in 2012, where they played four at the US Open.

Albert Vinolas-Ramos vs Fernando Verdasco: Prediction

Albert Vinolas-Ramos

The No.7 seed has played plenty of matches on clay this year, as compared to his opponent, who hasn’t showed up on clay at all in 2021. Furthermore, Ramos has won their last two meetings on the dirt, which will further make him the overwhelming favourite for this match. Given the rustiness of Verdasco, we can expect this one to finish quickly, without it having to go three sets.

Match Prediction: Vinolas-Ramos should win in two sets.
