Ben Shelton is one of the two players in the draw to make his debut at the ATP Finals. The other player is Group Jimmy Connors’ Lorenzo Musetti.

Shelton, who is playing for Group Bjorn Borg, has to win his second round robin match, given that he lost his first to two-time ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev. In his second match, the American ace will be up against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Ben Shelton vs. Felix Auger-Aliassime: Match Preview

Ben Shelton is chasing his second title of the season. Earlier this season, although he was making deep runs, he was also suffering early-round exits. The 22-year-old played his first final of the season at the Munich Open but failed to end the ATP 500 event in his favor, losing the match to home favorite Alexander Zverev.

Shelton then suffered a few more multiple exits before he reached the final of the Canadian Open. It was the first time Shelton played the championship match of a Masters 1000 tournament. He ended the match in his favor, winning against Karen Khachanov.

Then at the US Open, his campaign ended in a complete disaster, and he, for the first time in his career, suffered a mid-match retirement due to his left-shoulder injury. Since then, Shelton lost the next three events without making deep runs. Before arriving in Turin, he lost to eventual winner Jannik Sinner in the Paris Masters quarterfinals.

Felix Auger-Aliassime started the season in an emphatic fashion as he clinched the Adelaide International by defeating Sebastian Korda. Following his Australian Open early-round exit, the Canadian ace defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic in the Open Sud de France final.

The 25-year-old then reached his third final of the season at the Dubai Tennis Championships, which he couldn’t end in his favor, losing the match to two-time Grand Slam finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. Auger-Aliassime then suffered several early-round exits before ending his title drought at the European Open by defeating Jiri Lehecka.

At the Paris Masters, he played his career’s second Masters 1000 final, losing the match to Jannik Sinner. It was Sinner, who beat him in the previous round-robin match, while Shelton lost to Zverev in his debut match.

While Shelton has qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time, Auger-Aliassime played it for the first time in 2022, but couldn’t progress to the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime’s qualification depended on Lorenzo Musetti’s result in the Hellenic Championship.

He was scheduled to play the ATP 250 event in Metz, but he chose to withdraw from it, while Musetti continued to fight for the eighth spot by featuring at the Athens 250 event. Musetti’s defeat in the final against the 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic granted Auger-Aliassime the eighth spot.

But because the Serb, also the seven-time champion in the event, ended up withdrawing from the ATP Finals for the second consecutive time, both Musetti and Auger-Aliassime got the chance to play.

Shelton has met the World No.8 just once and lost the match. They met in the third round of last year’s Roland Garros, which Auger-Aliassime won in straight sets.
