Dominic Thiem vs Marcos Giron: Preview

Dominic Thiem

The World No.4 makes his return to the tour after a much-needed break from tennis. Thiem was last seen at the Dubai duty free championships, where he was dumped in the second round by Lloyd Harris. The Austrian hasn’t tasted success at all this year, and will be playing his first ever match on the clay. The reigning US Open champion is also a two-time runner-up at this event and remains one of the biggest threats to Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic on the dirt.

On the other hand, the 27-year-old comes into this tournament with four matches on clay this year. Giron suffered a first round elimination at the Estoril Open last week at the hands of Corentin Moutet, and entered the Madrid Masters a qualifier. The American has got three wins under his belt in the Spanish capital this week to get to the round of 32. On the way, he beat Thiago Monteiro, Yoshihito Nishioka and Pablo Andujar.

Dominic Thiem vs Marcos Giron: Prediction

Dominic Thiem

While Thiem will be playing his first ever match on clay this season, his opponent is coming off some crucial wins under his belt. That said, the Austrian is a seasoned campaigner and knows what it takes to succeed on the dirt. Given the altitude and faster court, Thiem will also try and unleash some of his trademark backhands, which could bother the American. Thiem might appear rusty for the initial few games, but expect the No.3 seed to get into this groove and prevail without much discomfort.

Match Prediction: Thiem should win in two sets.
