Stefanos Tsitsipas came into the tournament after losing the finals of the Acapulco Open to Alexander Zverev in straight sets. He received a bye in the first round of the Miami Open 2021. In the second round, he defeated Damir Dzumhur in straight sets, dropping just five games. He had to grind out a victory against the 28th seeded Japanese, Kei Nishikori in the third round, as he defeated him in three sets.
