Borna Coric vs Marton Fucsovics: Match Preview

Borna Coric

Croat Borna Coric is having a decent season in 2020, with deep runs into various tournaments. His best performances in this year came after the pandemic break. He secured a quarterfinals spot at the US Open but lost to German heavyweight Alexander Zverev despite taking the first set. He also did well to make the finals at the St. Petersburg Open but was ultimately outmatched by the home favorite Andrey Rublev.

The world no. 24 last played at the recently-concluded Vienna Open, where he exited in the second round after losing to Novak Djokovic. He gave a tough fight in the first set of that match but eventually lost steam. Having only reached the second rounds in both the previous Masters he played in this year, he will be looking to progress further in Paris.

His opponent is Hungarian Marton Fucsovics. The world no. 52 hasn’t gone further than the quarterfinals, in any event, this year. However, he has made good runs in all the Grand Slams, reaching at least the third round in each of the three. His best performance in terms of prize money came at the French and Australian Opens, two fourth-round runs that netted him a total of around 360,000 euros. His deepest run into a tournament was at Doha where he reached the quarterfinals.

Marton has only one title in his name – the 2018 Geneva Open – whereas Coric has two.

Borna Coric vs Marton Fucsovics: Head-to-Head

Marton Fucsovics

The two players have met twice before on tour, with both meetings coming in 2019. Their first meeting was at the second round of the Australian Open which Coric won in straight sets. The last meeting was at the St. Petersburg Open. Both players were giving tough fights throughout the match, but unfortunately, Fucsovics had to retire from the match due to an injury during the third set.

The head-to-head stands at 2-0 to Borna Coric.

Borna Coric vs Marton Fucsovics: Match Prediction

Borna Coric will look to carry his recent form forward and proceed further in the Paris Masters.

Coric will be poised to take a victory in this first-round match. His great form in 2020 and good confidence on the indoor hard court surface will help him ease through the match relatively unscathed.

The Croat’s all-round play and tendency to make opponents run around the court will trouble the Hungarian, who prefers a more direct approach to the game. Fucsovics will need to conjure something special if he were to get a good result in the game.

Match Prediction: Borna Coric to clinch the victory in straight sets.
