Paul comes into this opening round clash after suffering an early elimination in the first round at the hands of Aslan Karatsev at the 2020 Tokyo games. The American has played most of these matches in 2021 till now on the European clay. However the 24-year-old would take confidence from the fact that he made the quarterfinals on the hard courts of the Rotterdam Open earlier in the year. Moreover, the 56-ranked player Paul will also breathe easy with the fact that he beat Elahi last year on the hard courts.

On the other hand, Galan has managed to play on all the surfaces in 2021. While most of his matches have been on the challenger circuit, The Colombian has also managed to break into some of the major tournaments like Miami, Munich, Halle and the French Open. As far as the hard courts are concerned, he has only played eight matches on the surface and was knocked out by Alexander Zverev in the second round of the 2020 Tokyo games.
