Pierre Emerick Aubameyang scored twice with Tierney adding another as Arsenal win 3-2 against Watford. The Hornets’ fought back after going 3-0 down but it was not enough as they go to the 2nd division. Arsenal started the match strongly and raced into a 3 – 0 lead within 33 minutes.
Aubameyang gave Arsenal the lead after 5 minutes as the Gunners were awarded a penalty. A challenge by Dawson on Lacazette went to VAR which awarded Arsenal, a penalty. Watford grew into the game and had chances of their own with Deeney and Pereyra coming close.
However, Kieran Tierney got his first Premier League goal against the run of play to double Arsenal lead. Aubameyang potentially sealed Watford’s destiny when he scored his 22nd goal of the season. Troy Deeney pulled one back for Watford after Luiz was guilty of catching Welbeck.
Watford went to half time losing 3-1. Results in the other games, meant Watford needed a miraculous comeback to win and survive in the top division. It was all Watford at the start of second half with Welbeck coming close to pulling one back. He did pull one back in the 66th minute after Martinez’s clearance came straight back at him.
Watford gave a spirited performance and had their chances for the equalizer. Deeney and Welbeck scuffed their attempts wide as the match ended 3-2 in favour of Arsenal.
The result sealed Watford’s fate as they finish in the 19th place. Watford will turn their heads towards the Championship while Arsenal will look back on their topsy-turvy campaign. Arteta’s side finish 8th after 38 matches.
However, Arsenal can still qualify for Europa League if they manage to beat Chelsea in Saturday’s FA Cup final. Arteta will be looking to end the season on a winning note with the FA Cup title.
