Novak Djokovic strolled to an easy win against Daniil Medvedev on Sunday to lift his ninth Australian Open title. With all the talk about the next gen taking over, the old guard led by world no. 1 Djokovic showed that they are there to stay with a ruthlessly dominant position both on the day of the final and throughout the tournament as well, while suffering from an abdominal injury at that.

It took the Serb all of 1 hour and 58 minutes to ease past his Russian opponent as he won with a score of 7-5, 6-2, 6-2. Djokovic now has a whopping nine titles at the Australian Open and there is a case for his dominance in the Slam to be considered on par with Rafael Nadal‘s at Roland Garros. That’s exactly what former world no. 1 Mats Wilander stated while talking about Djokovic’s win.

Mats Wilander all praise for Novak Djokovic

Wilander talked about Djokovic’s dominance at the Australian open to Eurosport and said, “When you watch Novak play at the Australian Open, it looks as difficult to beat him here as it does to beat Rafa Nadal at Roland Garros. The last two matches were faultless – he just didn’t make any mistakes in the semi-finals or the final It shouldn’t be because it’s a faster court, it should be much more difficult. But he looks so solid, so confident, and once he gets into the lead I don’t know what you have to do.”

“It’s amazing how Djokovic has claimed the Australian Open as his home Slam. Rafa has Roland Garros as his home Slam, and Roger Federer has Wimbledon as his home. So it’s amazing how they all dominate in their own living rooms,” Wilander added.

He further stated that the Serb will now be the favorite to win the remaining Slams of the year except the French Open. “Now we start thinking Novak is most probably the favourite to win the US Open because it’s a hard court. Wimbledon? Maybe he’s the favorite,” Wilander signed off.
