Novak Djokovic faced off against Alexander Zverev of Germany in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open 2021 today and came up trumps. The players who are no strangers to this stage of a competition usually perform at a phenomenal level and this was bound to be a cracker which it was. Both the players played good tennis and Djokovic had to dig deep in order to win this one.

The match was won by Novak Djokovic with a score of 6(6)-7,6-2,6-4,7-6(6) .

Novak Djokovic Fights a Tough Battle against Zverev

The first game of the first set was given to Zverev by Djokovic courtesy of a double fault. Zverev doubled down on it with another win making it 2-0. Zverev kept up with Djokovic keeping a lead of one game at 4-3. Then Zverev extended the lead making it 5-3. But Djokovic was not prepared to give up so easily, Djokovic fought back to make it 5-5. And then took a lead with 6-5, But then Zverev pushed the game into a tie-breaker and took the set with a score of 7-6(6).

The second set was a complete turn around in terms of which player was in control. Djokovic pushed Zverev into a deficit of 5-1. Zverev tried to comeback but then Djokovic went to take the set with 6-2.

The third set started with Zverev taking back control by taking a lead on Djokovic with 3-0. But Djokovic fought back making it 4-4, but it continued to seem like Zverev might take back his lead. However, Djokovic dug deep and pulled out the set for himself with a 6-4 score.

The fourth set saw Zverev taking the lead again with 2-0 and after a brief struggle extending his lead to 3-0. But Djokovic was able to bring it to a tie yet again making it 3-3. Zverev took the lead again only for the Serbian to make it a tie again t 5-5. This set went into the tie-breaker as well and it was a nail-biting ending to the match. Finally with an ace Novak Djokovic took the set, 7-6(6).

In the post match interview, when asked about the match, Djokovic said that even after the pre-match warm-up he was unsure about his condition and that he feels drained emotionally and that they pushed each other to the limit. About his injury, he said that this was not the worst injury that he is facing and expressed his gratitude for the ATP medical team and his physiotherapy. About his next opponent Aslan Karatsev, he said that Karatsev is a strong player and will definitely do well. He also expressed his concern about the amount of injuries occurring to his fellow players in the tournament.
