Nadal withdrew from the ATP Cup tie against Greece citing back stiffness. Since then though the news coming out of his camp hasn’t been that discouraging. With a comparatively easy draw, Nadal is expected to make steady progress and go deep into the tournament. Laslo Dere is relatively unknown on the big stage, but he has to his credit a few top 10 scalps, like Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev etc. Which means, on his day he can play a good match.

A fit Nadal will not give Dere a sniff. But, if he is half fit and Dere plays as well as he has shown he can, in certain matches, he might be able to pull off an upset. But even the most ardent of Dere supporters know that that’s an idea too far fetched. Nadal will win this.

Match Prediction: Nadal to win in straight sets.
