Multiple grand slam winner Stan Wawrinka will kick off his Australian Open campaign against Pedro Sousa. The World No.18 pulled out of his quarter-final match with Jeremy Chardy on Friday after beating both Mikhail Kukushkin and Alex Bolt in three sets to warm up for this tournament.

The 35-year-old will be one of the few non-Australian players who receive a lot of support at Melbourne Park as a former champion back in 2014.

His opponent, Sousa is currently ranked 108th in the world. The 32-year-old lost in the second round of the Murray River Open to eventual champion Dan Evans to enter the Australian Open.

Sousa will play just his second Australian Open match and has been unlucky to meet another top player having lost to Alex de Minaur at this stage two years ago.

The two players haven’t met before on tour. This will be the first time they will face each other and it promises to be an exciting one if Sousa could break Wawrinka’s serve early.

Wawrinka is a former champion at Melbourne and a well-loved persona on tour. He even enjoys the majority of support from the crowds at Melbourne Park. Wawrinka will start as a heavy favorite and only a big blunder from his side could alter the result. Expect Wawrinka to cruise through easily.

Prediction: Wawrinka to win in straight sets.
