Australian Open 2021: Stefanos Tsitsipas moves to Round 3, after tough fight with Kokkinakis

Stefanos Tsitsipas faced off against Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round of the Australian Open 2021. Both the players were considered to be equally matched and their game surely proved that. Kokkinakis brought a strong service game by constantly putting Tsitsipas on the backfoot. However, Tsitsipas was able to overcome the resistance and moved to the next round.

The match was won by Stefanos Tsitsipas with a score of 6(5)-7,6-4,6-1,6(5)-7

Tsitsipas moves to Round-3

The first set was a nail biting affair as both the player matched each other to a tie at 4-4. Tsitsipas got a lead over Kokkinakis with 5-4. But, Kokkinakis’ service game made it reach a tie at 6-6. The tie-breaker was again a nail biter as both the players were matching each other in the scores.Until, a double fault from Tsitsipas gave the set to Kokkinakis. The set ended with a score of 6(5)-7.

The second set started with Kokkinakis taking the lead by bagging the first game. At this point, the stats were still on Tsitsipas’ side with a few stats on Kokkinakis’ side. At this point, in the match, both the players were still giving a good fight to each other. However, Tsitsipas managed to get the lead and won the set with 6-4.

The third set, Tsitsipas started off strong by taking the first game in an aggressive fashion. Followed by a second win Kokkinakkis tried to fight back but was sidelined by the agressive and defensive mix with which Tsitsipas came at him. Tsitsipas took the set with a score of 6-1.

By the fourth set, none of the players showed any signs of backing down. Both the players brought the game to a tie yet again at 2-2 after Tsitsipas was in lead. The tie got to extend to 5-5 thanks to Kokkinakis’ efforts. Both players showed a good service game and that cumulated in a tie-breaker. Kokkinakis took an initial lead but was caught up to by Tsitsipas but the Australian was able to win this set. The set ended with a score of 6(5)-7.

The fifth set started with Tsitsipas increasing his aggression gradually and getting a lead of 4-2. The lead got further extended to 5-2. But Thanasi was able to overcome the deficit to get it to 5-4. But an overpowered shot from Kokkinakis gave the match point to Tsitsipas. The set ended with 6-4.

In the post-match interview, Stefanos thanked his fan for coming out. He praised the organizing committee to let people attend. He also praised his opponent calling him a “great fighter” and also praised his service game.
