BWF unveils updated calendar, World Tour finals and World Championships to go down in December as World Tour faces further setbacks

The World Junior Championships, scheduled for October 4-17 in China, had also been postponed due to travel restrictions.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) revealed an updated calendar for the year 2021 on Wednesday. The new itinerary confirmed that the World Tour finals and the World Championships are set to go down in December as planned. While the World Tour finals will be played from 01-05 December in Bali, the World Championships are set to happen from 12-19 December in Huelva.

BWF still appears to be keen on getting the currently postponed Malaysian Open and Malaysian Masters back on the disrupted schedule if the situation permits. “A few other remaining tournaments are still categorised as postponed. Final decisions on those tournaments will come at a later date,” said BWF in a statement.

The Korean Open and Macau Open have become the latest entries to the list of badminton tournaments to be called off due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Korean Open, initially slated for August 31 to September 5 while the Macau Open was scheduled to take place from November 2-7.

The World Junior Championships, scheduled for October 4-17 in China, had also been postponed. BWF shares that it will not be possible to host any event in China this year and will be looking for an appropriate date to reschedule the event. On the other hand, The SaarLorLux Open 2021 in Germany has been upgraded to BWF World Tour Super 500 status. It will now be played under the new name of Hylo Open 2021.

The World Tour which was halted after the All-England in March will resume with the Taipei Open 2021. The Super 300 event will kick off from 7th September marking the return of badminton following the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics.
