It was a mixed day for India at Spain Masers. Three singles player advanced to quarterfinal but India campaign in doubles came to an end.

Women’s Singles

Saina Nehwal secured a straight game win over Ukraine’s Maria Ulitina to enter the women’s singles quarter-finals. Saina is currently racing against time to qualify for her fourth Olympics. She will face Thailand’s third seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan in quarterfinal. Ongbamrungphan has beaten the former world No 1 twice in the last two encounters.

Men’s Singles

Kidambi Srikant poor run continues as compatriot as Ajay Jayaram wretched his hopes of qualifying for the Tokyo Games. Kidambi looked completely out of touch and went down 6-21, 17-21 in his second round match.

If we look at previous tournament this year, Kidambi had lost in first in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. He desperately needed to make it to the quarters or semifinals consistently to qualify for the Olympics. But today’s result has almost dashed his chances for Tokyo Olympics.

Sameer Verma also made it to the last eight with a hard-fought 21-14, 16-21, 21-15 win over Germany’s Kai Schaefer. He will face either Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn or Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen in the men’s singles quarter-finals.

India lost both doubles matches

It was a difficult day in doubles as India lost both the mixed doubles and women’s doubles to bow out of the competition.

In women’s doubles Reddy/Ashwini Ponnappa lost 18-21, 14-21 to third seeded Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva. In the mixed doubles, Sikki and Pranaav Jerry Chopra went down fighting 16-21, 21-17, 11-21 to top seeded Malaysian pair of Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie.
