With the Cleveland Browns completing a blockbuster trade for Deshaun Watson, it’s essentially set in stone that Baker Mayfield is out. Where he’ll go and when that is remains a bit of a mystery, however.
Once the Watson trade went through, many speculated that teams like the Colts, Seahawks or Saints would make a play for Baker Mayfield. Well, the Colts did trade for a quarterback but it was Matt Ryan. That led people to think the Falcons could go after Mayfield to replace Ryan but they went to free agency to pick up Marcus Mariota.
As of now, the Seahawks are still in play for Mayfield and there are some reasons why it would make sense. Firstly, they need a quarterback, and Mayfield could very well thrive in Pete Carroll’s run-first offense. Along with that, Carroll doesn’t seem to want to be part of a rebuild and if Mayfield plays well enough, they could remain competitive. That is a massive if, however.
With all this in mind, Tony Pauline revealed what could lie ahead for Baker Mayfield in 2022.
Tony Pauline believes Baker Mayfield could be traded on draft day
On a segment of ‘Draft Insiders’, Tony Pauline was quoted saying “The Cleveland Browns front office is still in touch with Baker Mayfield to try and get him somewhere he wants to go but nothing is imminent. The Browns have kind of backed themselves in a corner because they have to get rid of Baker Mayfield. And, it’s not compensation that teams are looking for, it’s how much of that guaranteed contract that they are willing to accept.”
Pauline further added “It’s a trade that may not occur until the last day before the draft. Another thing I’m hearing is that Baker Mayfield is out in Texas working with Patrick Mahomes’ quarterback coach to improve his mechanics and throwing motion. That is what Mitch Trubisky did and we saw how well he did in free agency. So, nothing is imminent and it may be the team that is willing to take on the largest amount of Mayfield’s contract, that’s where he’ll end up.”
We came into the offseason with numerous teams in need of a quarterback but as free agency and trades have gone by, there aren’t many left. All it takes is for one team to feel desperate enough to want a quarterback during the draft and then maybe, Mayfield could be moving to a new city for 2022.
