Over the course of a year it was reported that Dutch international Gini Wijnaldum will join his former manager at Barcelona. This intensified as Liverpool made it clear that they were attempting to sign Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich. With Wijnaldum not signing a new contract with Liverpool over a year and it seeming unlikely that his wage demands will be met at Liverpool, it will be interesting to see what decision the player will make.
Ilaix Moriba is favoured by Ronald Koeman now as he is on par with Gini Wijnaldum and has a better understanding of tactics
Part of the reason why Barcelona has turned their attention away from Gini Wijnaldum is because of the emergence of Ilaix Moriba. The young Spanish kid from La Masia is believed to offer everything that Wijnaldum offers, while also having better understanding of the system. When you have a player like that, it makes sense that you wouldn’t want to spend on a new player who demands a higher wage amount.
Gini Wijnaldum’s wage demands is what is keeping clubs from readily signing him as clubs are going through a tough phase financially. The coronavirus pandemic has seen clubs lose revenue through the fans while also having to deal with the regular expenses with lessened revenue. Only if Wijnaldum would reduce his asking wages could a club be interested in signing him. Serie A clubs Inter Milan and Juventus have been reported to be interested in him.
It will be interesting to see what will happen in the summer as Gini Wijnaldum moving to Barcelona was highly expected to go through.
