A batsman getting run out twice on the same delivery, it is not something one expects to see in top competitions. While such scenes are typical in club cricket, the Big Bash League (BBL) witnessed such a hilarious and embarrassing dismissal. The dismissal saw Adelaide Strikers batsman Jake Weatherald get run out on both ends during a match against the Sydney Thunder.

The incident happened when Weatherald’s batting partner Phil Salt drove a Chris Green delivery straight back at the bowler. Green managed to get a finger to it and diverted the ball back onto the stumps. Although Weatherald had hardly left his crease, he was caught short on the non-striker’s end. And this where the fun began.

After the ball struck the stumps, it deflected into the off-side. Salt called Weatherald through for a single, only for the ball to be thrown to keeper Sam Billings, who dived onto the stumps before Weatherald made his ground. And just like that, the South Australian all-rounder was dismissed twice on a single ball.

Commentators go berserk

The incident left the on-air commentators in splits. Former Aussie batsman Mark Waugh stressed the importance of concentrating while batting no matter the end you are on.

He wasn’t even backing up that far either, and he’s still out … I think he’s got to work on his running between wickets. Seriously, he’s got to concentrate more,” Waugh was quoted by Fox Sports

I’ve never ever seen that before,” he adds after watching the replay. “He wasn’t backing up, he’s just standing there. Good player, but got to wake up when he’s running between wickets.

Brett Lee, who was also left astounded by the incident, pointed out the fatal flaw in Weatherald’s technique while backing up at the non striker’s end.

I’ve never seen anyone run out twice,” Lee exclaims. “I just noticed there, it’s almost like the teapot. He’s standing there with his hand on his hip, backing up, Jake Weatherald.
