On June 25, 1983, India attained their first-ever cricket World Cup triumph, defeating West Indies. At the Lord’s Cricket Ground, by 43 runs, India made its history. It is now 37 years to India’s title in the tournament. At that time the team was led by the “all-rounder” Kapil Dev.

IT WAS THE FIRST ONE FOR INDIA.

West Indies playing their third consecutive WC final, while India playing their very first. However, India defeated them and claimed the title.
The Indian playing XI were, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Sunil Gavaskar, Sandeep Patil, Kapil Dev, Mohinder Amarnath, Yashpal Sharma, Roger Binny, Syed Kirmani, Madan Lal, Kirti Azad, and Balwinder Sandhu.

India lost the toss and was asked to bat first. West Indies we’re confident enough as they arguably boasted the world’s best bowling attack. Unfortunately, India didn’t survive the stipulated 60 overs as they were bowled out for 183 in 54.4 overs. Only three sixes were hit in the Indian innings, from Srikkanth, Sandeep Patil, and Madan Lal.

But this doesn’t stop India from winning their title. Initially for West Indies, chasing the target of 184 to win the third World cup in a row, didn’t think it was a big deal. Gradually the dynamics of the game changed. Soon the West Indies were surprised when Sandhu famously clean bowled Gordon Greenidge with a huge inswinger. Though they crossed 50 with Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards batting smoothly. But just in time, Madan Lal struck for India felling West Indies to 57/3.
Madan still bowling, the score went 66/4. Kapil Dev once again rose to the occasion as he caught West Indies Skipper Clive Lloyd off Roger Binny reeling West Indies at 66/5.

With Sandhu and M Amarnath, the defending champions fell to 124/8. Soon Kapil Dev trapped Andy Roberts in front of the wicket and Amarnath clean bowled Michael Holding dismissing West indies for 140 in 52 overs, making India the winner.

Indian bowling exploited the weather and pitch conditions perfectly to bowl out the best batting line-up of the era, winning by 43 runs and completing one of the most stunning upsets in cricket history, defeating the previously invincible West Indies. Kapil Dev lifting the trophy at the balcony of Lord’s Cricket Ground still remains an image to savor for all the Indian fans.
