The flying Finn came blaze afoot as he put on the fastest lap of 1:44:493 sec on soft compounds.

Soft compounds came out of the pit lane after an hour in to the session, but Hamilton couldn’t catch Bottas’s time, a small mistake in sector 3 held him back.

Verstappen also set a competitive time with only 0.012s behind the Mercedes of Hamilton which put him ahead of the duo of Racing Points.

P4 Sergio Perez was the faster of the two Racing Point’s 0.136s off top spot. Team mate Lance Stroll was 0.240s off Perez.

It was worrisome session for Ferrari, who ended up P14 and P15 with just the duo William’s behind them.

Both Haas driver failed to set a time after Romain Grosjean encountered power issues on his early out lap.

Both Grosjean and Magnussen were held in the garage without setting a time in FP1 as Haas examined their Ferrari units.

Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi didn’t set a time either, with unexplained issues.
