Considered to be one of the greatest heavyweights of all time, 44-year old Russian Fedor Emelianenko will make a return to fighting after almost two years. He is set to headline Bellator’s first-ever event in Moscow, Russia. It is set to take place on the 23rd of October, with the opponent yet to be decided.
Bellator tweeted on their official handle, “BREAKING NEWS: Bellator MMA President @ScottCoker has announced the promotion’s first-ever event in Moscow, Russia on Saturday, October 23rd headlined by the legendary Fedor Emelianenko“.
Fedor Emelianenko last fought Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson
The Russian boasts a stunning MMA record of 39 wins and just 6 losses in his MMA career. He has won championships across a lot of promotions including StrikeForce, Pride, WAMMA.
However, Emelianenko never fought in the UFC. There was a time when UFC President Dana White was hell-bent on signing the Russian. White had planned to set up an ultimate showdown between Fedor and then-UFC champion Brock Lesnar. But the negotiations between White and Fedor’s team eventually failed.
Fedor announced that he was retiring in 2012. And White made yet another attempt to sign the Russian back in 2012, only to fail again. Fedor then returned to mixed martial arts three years later, and since then he has been a regular competitor.
With the opponent for the fight yet to be decided, Fedor will be looking forward to returning from a 2-year hiatus with a bang, especially in his own backyard.
