England came up with a chase for the ages against India in the second ODI yesterday as they aced a stiff target of 337 with more than 6 overs to spare. Earlier, India had got to 336/6 in 50 overs, riding on a century from KL Rahul and some blistering hitting at the death from Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya. Skipper Virat Kohli had earlier contributed with a half-century and revived India from the early loss of their openers as well.
In reply, England came out all guns blazing and went about attacking the Indian bowlers. They were especially harsh on the spinners as Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes raced away. The former got to his century and the latter seemed set to get to his as well. However, he was dismissed on 99 by Bhuvneshwar Kumar who had him caught by the wicket-keeper with a bouncer down the leg-side.
Watch – Ben Stokes’ reaction after missing out on a ton
Ben Stokes was dejected on missing out on a century and he looked up at the skies. He was then seen apologizing, probably to his late father who passed away recently. The moment was a truly poignant one in a match or an innings rather, that saw every batsman go hammer and tongs.
After Stokes’ dismissal, England suffered a mini-collapse as they lost 2 more wickets for just 2 more runs. However, Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone ensured there weren’t any more wickets by steadying the ship and taking England home in the 44th over.
The third ODI will now be the decider and it will take place on the 28th of March, beginning at 1:30 PM IST.
