Bianca Andreescu’s coach, Sylvain Bruneau announced on Saturday that he had tested positive for covid-19 upon his arrival in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open. In a short four paragraph statement, the coach stated he had followed all safety protocols and had tested negative 72 hours before boarding the flight from Abu Dhabi.

“I am extremely saddened and sorry for the consequences now on everyone’s shoulders sharing my flight,” he said. “The rest of my team is negative and I sincerely hope that any further disruption is kept to a minimum. “I have no idea how I might have contracted this virus,” he added.

All members of the chartered flight from Abu Dhabi will have to undergo a mandatory hard quarantine of 14 days. Australian health authorities stated on Saturday that another flight from Los Angeles had two covid positive cases, of which one was a crew member.

Bianca Andreescu enjoyed a breakthrough 2019 season, where she claimed her first Grandslam title, defeating Serena Williams in the finals of the US Open. However, injuries have hampered her career so far, as she was out on the sidelines for all of the previous season, 2020.

The Canadian’s last professional match came in 2019 at the WTA Finals where she had to withdraw midway through the match against Karolina Pliskova owing to an injury. Andreescu was expected to make her return at one of the two Australian Open warm-up tournaments, Gippsland Trophy and Yarra Valley Classic. However, since she will have to undergo a mandatory hard quarantine of 14 days in which she will not be allowed to practice outdoors, so it remains to be seen if her comeback gets delayed.
