Premier league leaders Manchester City gave yet another comprehensive performance to defeat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League round of sixteen. Joao Cancelo gave a delightful assist to Portuguese international Bernardo Silva to open the scoring for Manchester City.

Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus then doubled the lead for the visitors to seal the deal. Florian Neuhaus says that his teammates were too busy defending and made simple mistakes while in possession.

Monchengladbach were far from their original condition and the quality which they showed in the group stages against teams like Real Madrid. The players looked extremely nervous and made silly unforced errors in the final third.
Manager Marco Rose accepted that they had to defend and run a lot but that they were defeated by the better team. Monchengladbach will have a chance to turn things around but looking at City’s form it seems unlikely.

We wanted to be courageous with our limited chances and I felt we did that well at times,” Neuhaus said.

“City played with a very high line and if we’d been better with the final ball in behind, there might have been more in it for us. We have to be braver in the second leg.

“Manchester City were really good in possession, which meant we did a lot of running tonight. We had the odd chance in transition here and there but didn’t execute them cleanly.”
