Indian boxers going to the Tokyo Olympics

Boxing has been a regular feature at the Olympics ever since its debut at the 1904 Missouri Olympics, the third modern Olympics. The event is organised as a set of tournaments as a series of touraments across weight category. The number of weight classes has changed over the years and currently stands at eight for men and five for women.

It was only in the 2012 London Olympics that women’s boxing was included in the Summer Games for the first time. In the history of the sport, the United States of America has won the most medals followed by Cuba and Great Britain. India, a rising force in the sport, has only two medals in boxing at the quadrennial event.

The Indian boxers will be looking to add to the medal tally this time around and they are well placed to do so. Indian will be sending nine pugilists to the Tokyo Olympics and eight of them are placed in the top 10 of the Road to Tokyo rankings. The Indian contingent had their best ever outing in the history of the tournament at the recently concluded Asian Championships.

Returning with a whooping 15 medals, the Indian pugilists have gained much needed confidence at the tournament. Pooja Rani was the only Tokyo bound Indian boxer to finish with a gold medal. Amit Panghal and Mary Kom put up impressive performances but had to settle for silver despite coming agonisingly close to a gold medal.

Manish Kaushik along with Panghal, Mary and Pooja are India’s brightest medal hopes in boxing. Panghal will be gunning for gold and is most likely to succeed if he is able to edge past his nemesis Uzbekistan’s Shakhobidin Zoirov. Zoirov has had the better of Panghal in their last three bouts but the Indian came agonisingly close to toppling him in the Asian Championship final and will be looking to have the last laugh at the Olympics.

Venue for Boxing at Tokyo Olympics 2020

Kokugikan Arena
Kokugikan Arena

The Kokugikan Arena, also known as Ryogoku Sumo Hall, will host the boxing events at the 2020 Olympic Games. This venue is the home of Japan’s national sport, sumo. Located in Ryogoku district, the current arena was built in 1985. The arena is mostly used for sumo tournaments, called ‘honbasho’ held in January, May and September.

Between sumo tournaments here, the arena also hosts boxing and pro wrestling tournaments and music concerts. The arena’s bowl shape design allows spectators an easy view of the centre of the auditorium from wherever they are seated. But with no spectators to be allowed due to the state of emergency in Japan, the world’s top boxers will have to box it out in an empty arena.

Timings and Live Streaming

The events will take place at a convenient time for the Indian viewers. The early morning events will be starting off from 7:30 am in the morning while the later events will be kicking off at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm according to Indian Standard Time. All events will be live streamed on the Sony Sports Network.
