Mohammed Siraj had the most remarkable summer in Australia as he rose above personal tragedy, immense pressure and racist abuse to stand tall and help India secure a famous victory in the Test series. Making his debut in the series, he ended up as India’s leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets. While he was in Australia before the tour began, his father Mohammed Ghouse breathed his last. Despite being given an option to return to India, Siraj decided to stay with the Indian camp.
His dedication was rewarded when an injury to Mohammed Shami meant that he got his chance to debut in the second Test against Australia. Very soon, by the time the fourth Test, Siraj became the spearhead of the attack as the injuries piled up for India. Despite the various setbacks, India and Siraj came up trumps in the most incredible fashion by clinching the series 2-1.
