Brazil withdraw 2023 Women’s World Cup bid, backs Colombia

Brazil has withdrawn its 2023 Women’s World Cup bid on Monday, as it cannot provide the financial assurances that FIFA needs. The finances have gone for a hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact.

The Brazil football confederation also declared that it will support Colombia’s bid against Japan and Australia-New Zealand’s joint bid. South America has hosted many events in the past but it has never hosted the Women’s World Cup. Brazil’s backing justifies that they want the World cup to be in South America if not Brazil. The 2023 Women’s World Cup will have 32 teams instead of 24. The location is expected to be announced by 25th June.

The confederation said, “It understands the position of caution of the Brazilian government, and of other public and private partners, which stopped them from finalizing the commitments within time or in the required form.”

Brazil is the worst-hit country in South America with 37,000 deaths. Investment bank, Goldman Sachs has predicted that Brazil’s economy will go downwards by at least 7.4%.
