The match began with both teams making their intentions clear, which was to play attacking football. FC Koln did not back out given the quality of RB Leipzig. They played freely and also created scoring opportunities. Both the teams hit the woodwork from long distance which was the closest they got to score a goal. But the first half set everything up for an exciting finish to the game.

The second half had all the drama with a goal being disallowed second time to Koln. But, finally they found a way through Modeste. Not long after that, Leipzig replied with a header by Haidara from a corner. After getting their equalizer, Leipzig went all out for the three points, but Koln stayed disciplined with their defense and made sure that another goal doesn’t go in. Koln made the last few minutes exciting but neither team could salvage a goal. The match ended 1-1

Here are the player ratings :

FC KOLN

Anthony Modeste (8/10): His persistence in front of the goal finally bared fruit as he scored a goal on his third attempt after his goals were disallowed two times.

Mark Uth (6/10): He had a pretty average game as he got more than enough opportunities to make a difference. His decision making skills let him down.

Thielmann (6/10): He failed to break the control of opposition’s mid-field. He was toyed by the opposition with one touch passing and clever interplays.

Ondrej Duda (7/10): He kept the pressure on the opposition as he hit the post in the first half and created many chances for his team.

Dejan Ljubicic (7/10): He made some great runs on the right flank. He was full of energy and used it purposefully. His work rate was also commendable.

Ellyes Skhiri (6/10): Apart from a few tackles and interceptions, he didn’t do much. His long passing was awful as he gave away the ball too often and was caught out of position.

Jonas Hector (7/10): He had an uncharacteristic game as he was forced to stay back by the opposition. He did his job well, which was to look after the likes of Nkunu.

Rafael Czichos (8/10): He was excellent with his positioning and tackles. He coordinated very well with his centre half partner and formed an impenetrable defensive wall.

Luca Killian (8/10): Killian had to be attentive as there were endless attacks from Leipzig’s forwards. He was great in air and was successful in keeping out the opposition.

Benno Schmitz (6/10): He had the most difficult job in the Koln team. He tried his best, but couldn’t keep out Szobozlai and the others out of the game. He was outnumbered on the left wing.

Timo Horn (9/10): He was the more active one among the two goalkeepers. He was Koln’s best player and in my view the man of the match. His save are the ones that kept Koln in the game.

Substitutes

Jorge Perez (8/10): He took over from where Czichos left. He made sure that the opposition doesn’t score another. He had some difficult tackles to make in the box and he made them with perfection.

Kingsley Ehizibue (7/10): He was brought in for Uth to add to the attacking options, but except a couple of passes he remained silent for the whole match.

Sebastian Andersson (6/10): He was brought in for the goal scorer Modeste. He barely had a touch of the ball as most often the possession was with Leipzig.

Salih Ozcan: N/A

Kingsley Schindler: N/A

RB Leipzig

Andre Silva (6/10): For all the attacking prowess RB Leipzig displayed today, he was a dark spot. He found it difficult to get going.

Dominik Szobozlai (7/10): He was lively throughout the first half but slowly faded away in the second half. The opposition couldn’t find answer to his creativity as he helped his team build attacks on a consistent basis.

Dani Olmo (7/10): He failed to keep his reputation as bring the difference maker for his team. Apart from a few glimpses he didn’t do much.

Christopher Nkunku (8/10): He was the biggest threat to the opposition with his pace and dribbling. He was unstoppable at times with his runs and on one-on-one situations.

Kevin Kampl (7/10): He helped his team control the mid-field. His passing and positional awareness made it difficult for the opposition to break in.

Amadou Haidara (8/10): The goal scorer, who had a quiet game till then suddenly came to life he was required the most. He found himself unmarked as a corner came in from which he converted his header with ease.

Josko Gvardiol (7/10): He was a great help offensively as he involved himself in many attacks from the left side. But he often left his centre backs all by themselves which made it hard for them to defend.

Mohamed Simakan (7/10): He was solid as an individual and didn’t let the opposition through. His positional awareness was stupendous as he neutralized many of the opposition’s attempts.

Vilmos Orban (6/10): He was awful in dealing with players like Modeste one-on-one. He was clumsy to cover the ground and left too much space for the opposition to exploit. He failed to mark players during set pieces.

Lukas Klostermann (6/10): The opposition had a red carpet on their left flank as Lukas was caught out of position too often. His passing was also off the mark.

Peter Gulacsi (8/10): In what seemed like a rare occasion, the best players in both the teams are their goal keepers. He sure let one in from an impossible-to-save range, but he also made some great saves, especially at the end when Koln were about steal all the three points.

Substitutes

Emil Fosbers (8/10): He added a different kind of dynamic to the team. He was extremely difficult to defend and often made his way in to the box and caused problems.

Yussuf Poulsen (6/10): He was no different from the guy he came on for. Everyone around him did very well to create chances but he couldn’t make himself a part of the attack.
