The most awaited middleweight contest of the year was finally upon us. Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders were set to face off in front of more than 70000 people at the AT&T Stadium. It had the whole world buzzing.

Round 1

Very little to no action in the first round. Both the fighters put on very measured performances. Hardly any shots were landed by both the fighters, with occasional body checks from both Canelo and Billy Joe Saunders. BJS connected with a few jabs sporadically. But Canelo was up for it. He edged out this round. 10-9 Alvarez

Alvarez picked up the pace in this round. His head movement was back to usual. He was back to his feet. And towards the middle of the round he connected with a proper uppercut. Saunders tried landing a plenty but Alvarez was too quick for him. 10-9 Alvarez

Round 3

It was all Canelo Alvarez in round 3. BJS tried throwing a plethora of punches, but was unable to land a proper one flush on the Mexican. With just one minute left Alvarez connected with a proper punch, before going on to land another right hook, although BJS wasn’t rocked. 10-9 Alvarez

Alvarez was moving freely now. He had found his rhythm and was looking more confident on the feet. BJS was checking him with his fast jabs, but was still not able to land the proper strike he desired. Halfway into the round, Canelo landed a proper uppercut giving him the round once again. 10-9 Alvarez

Saunders picks up the pace!

Round 5

Saunders upped the ante in this round. Realizing that he was on the back foot, he stepped up his game. A clean left hand and a strong right jab were landed by BJS. He then followed it up with a neat left hand. Alvarez didn’t do much besides a few body shots.’10-9 Saunders

Another round that might have gone Saunders’ way. The Brit was slowly finding his way back into the fight. He landed a couple of clean jabs, keeping Alvarez in check. He then landed a big left hand as well. And he also brought out the Tyson Fury moves halfway into the round. 10-9 Saunders

Round 7

BJS was well and truly back. He once again was striking with perfect efficiency. Alvarez was trying to land that one big decisive shot, but kept missing it, as BJS landed some occasional jabs outscoring the Mexican in this round. 10-9 Saunders

Canelo did a job on BJS this round. Plenty of clean strikes caught BJS off guard. And what’s more, Alvarez even taunted him, as BJS looked gassed out. Brilliant comeback from Alvarez after a poor few rounds. Alvarez’s uppercut caught BJS right under the eye, and once BJS reached his corner, they threw in the towel. The fight was waved off. Alvarez by corner stoppage!!
