Football governing body “FIFA” has extended the temporary rule change allowing 5 substitutions in game. Use of this has been extended to 2020-2021 season. This new amendment was first used in the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup. This rule helped in proper rotation of squad members in a game. The rule was used due to the three month layoff because of the Corona Pandemic.
But , this change was not welcomed by all. As clubs suggested that 5 substitution favors rich clubs with great squad depth. Also leading to unbalanced conditions during the match.
The governing body stated that this law will apply from next season onwards. They even stated that it is the league’s decision of all leagues whether the rule should be used or not.
Lack of resting period during league might put a burden on the players. To avoid that and guarantee recovery this rule is being added. A lot of matches will be played in short spans of time .
A representative said “The decision on whether to apply this temporary amendment.Remains at the discretion of each competition organizer.
“The changing impact of the pandemic on football will be kept under constant review. To ensure appropriate action is taken in the future in relation to this temporary amendment.”
“There are no changes to the details of the temporary amendment to the Laws of the Game, which will allow for a maximum of five substitutes to be used per team. However, to avoid disruption to the game, each team will only have three opportunities to make substitutions, although substitutions made at half-time are not counted as one of the three opportunities.
