#CheckmateCovid Online chess tournament raises 15 lakh

On Thursday, The ‘CheckmateCovid’ online chess tournament raised an amount of Rs 15 lakh, which was donated to the Karnataka Chief Minister’s COVID-19 Relief Fund. According to a media release, 19,245 people registered for the tournament which had a total prize pool of 10 lakhs.

GM Ankit Rajpara won the tournament, which was held on 2nd and 3rd May. The tournament was conducted by the Karnataka government along with the United Karnataka Chess Association and Mobile Premier League (MPL).

GM Bhakti Kulkarni won the award for the top-ranked female player and Shakuntala Devi won the award for top-ranked players above 60 years of age.

Karnataka Sports minister said that he thanks all the players who have participated and contributed to the Checkmatecovid chess tournament. Glad to have a good amount for the CM’s COVID relief fund. They must continue together and fight against this ongoing crisis.

In a chess game, matches were played very speedily, with each player getting 3 minutes in the game. The winner was decided on the basis of maximum such games won over the two-day duration of the tournament.
