Chelsea defeated Manchester United 3-1 as they march on to the finals against Arsenal. United were disappointing on the night with De Gea’s howler adding to an overall poor outing. Ole named a changed 11 as he looks to prioritise top 4 over FA Cup. However, the move backfired as Chelsea dominated United.
United looked poor from the start as Chelsea controlled possession. It was the Blues’ who had half chances while United were not looking motivated for the battle. Reece James had a shot parried away by De Gea as Chelsea looked to test United’s 3-man backline.
United’s first chance of the game came through Fernandes who had his effort tipped over the bar by Caballero. There was injury concern in the closing stages of half time after a clash of heads between Baily and Maguire. Initially Bailly looked fine but he had to be stretchered off in a lengthy stoppage time.
Chelsea snatched the lead minutes before half time after Giroud got on the end of Azpilicueta’s cross. It looked like De Gea had it covered but he made a meal of it as Blues edged ahead. United struggled to get in the game while Lampard’s Chelsea did well to control the game.
The lead was extended minutes after the restart as De Gea made a serious blunder from a low shot by Mount. Fred’s pass was intercepted by Mount who ran at United’s defence before having a shot. The 2nd goal by Chelsea woke up United as they tried to attack more.
Rashford came close to halving the deficit but his shot went just wide of the post. Solksjaer brought on Pogba and Greenwood in a mission to rescue the game but it yielded no result.
Chelsea continued to test United and came close to adding a 3rd through Giroud and Mount. Giroud’s flick was parried away by De Gea as Chelsea attacked relentlessly. James had his chance to add a 3rd from a corner but De Gea was upto the task again.
Chelsea did get 3rd, minutes later as Alonso’s cross was turned in by Maguire in his own goal. It was poor defending from the United captain as they stared at a humiliating defeat.
United did get a consolation goal late on as they were awarded a penalty after Hudson-Odoi tripped Martial. Bruno converted it to make it 3-1 on the night. However, it was too late as Chelsea fought to a 3-1 win.
It was a poor performance on the night by Solskjaer’s side after naming a changed line-up. Chelsea were the more motivated side as they ended United’s 19 match unbeaten run. In the process, they have set up a final clash against Arsenal, who defeated City 1-0 in the other semi-final.
Ole’s decision to prioritise the top 4 race will get justice if they win against West Ham in their next match. Meanwhile, Chelsea are up against champions Liverpool as they look to secure their place in Champions League next season.
