Having entered the T20 World Cup 2021 as hot favourites to lift the title, India failed to make it to the semifinals. The Men in Blue got off to a poor start as they were hammered by arch-rivals Pakistan by 10 wickets in a historic loss. While many expected the Indian team to bounce back, they lost their second encounter against New Zealand virtually ending all hopes of advancing to the next round.

While one can point out numerous reasons why India failed to make it past the Super 12 stage, the most prominent of them were the failure of the big guns and some poor selection calls. The subcontinental powerhouse left out the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Shreyas Iyer from the side and chose to go ahead with the star performers of IPL 2020.

The move backfired as the Indian middle order and bowling lacked the edge in the much important opening games. While India managed to put up a fight in their last three games, it was too little too late for the Men in Blue. As India’s campaign in the World Cup ended, we take a look at 5 Indian players from the T20 World Cup 2021 squad who might not feature in T20 World Cup 2022.

5. Rahul Chahar

Called up ahead of veteran Yuzvendra Chahal to the squad, budding leg spinner Rahul Chahar failed to make a mark in the tournament. Chahar played only a solitary game, which was against Namibia and went wicketless. The youngster’s performance in the warm-up games as well as the IPL which preceded was well below par and it is unlikely for him to get a call up in the next World Cup.

Yet another Indian spinner who failed to make his mark in his debut T20 World Cup is Varun Chakravarthy. The Tamil Nadu spinner was called for his mystery spin, one which troubled quite some batters in the IPL. But the youngster couldn’t make an impact as he failed to pick up a single wicket in the three games he played. Such a disappointing performance shows that Varun has much work to do if he is to succeed on the big stage.

3. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Veteran seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is one of the big guns who failed to fire on the big stage, Bhuvneshwar played only a single game in the tournament against Pakistan and went wicketless. With injuries peppering his career, the veteran pacer has dropped his pace and the trademark ability to swing. Bhubaneswar is much less effective at the fag end of his career and is not expected to make it to the squad for T20 WC 2022.

2. Hardik Pandya

Once taunted to be the next finisher for the side, Hardik Pandya has gradually lost his charm. Ever since hisback injury, hardik has not been his usual self with the bat and has seldom stepped up to bowl. In the T20 World Cup 2021, the all rounder managed to fire just once with the ball and was very expensive the couple of overs he bolwed. With his all round abilities essentially lost, it will be tough for Hardik to find a spot in the squad.

1. Ishan Kishan

Budding wicketkeeper batsman Ishan Kishan seemed to have lost his mojo after a breakaway IPL season. Following the first leg of IPL 2021, Ishan’s form has been patchy and he failed to rise to the occasion in the one match he played in the T20 World Cup. While there is almost a year for the next T20 World Cup, the Jharkhand batsman is not expected to make it to the squad given the abundance of talent when it comes to top order batsmen in India.
