BCCI announces annual player contracts for Indian women’s team; 3 players in Grade A bracket

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its annual player contracts for the women’s team. The women’s team follows a three-tier structure wherein the Grade A players are paid Rs. 50 lakhs, Grade B are paid Rs. 30 lakhs and Grade C are paid Rs. 10 lakhs. The period of the annual contracts is from October 2020 to September 2021.

The Indian women’s team have a tour of England next up where they will also play a Test in Bristol. For the tour, they will be travelling to the UK along with the men’s team on charter flights. After the tour of England, they will travel Down Under for a series against Australia. The series will also have a Test which will be the first pink ball day night Test match in the history of Indian women’s cricket. The same was confirmed today by BCCI secretary Jay Shah and subsequently by the International Cricket Council.

BCCI announced their player contracts yesterday and there weren’t a lot of surprises. The three players who were in Grade A last year were retained – Harmanpreet Kaur, Poonam Yadav and Smriti Mandhana. Meanwhile, young sensation Shafali Varma was rewarded for her excellent performances with a promotion to Grade B. Punam Raut and Rajeshwari Gayakwad were also promoted to Grade B. The likes of Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami have retained their Grade B contracts.

On the other hand, Veda Krishnamurthy, Ekta Bisht, Anuja Patil and D Hemalatha were those who missed out on receiving an annual contract despite having one for the previous year.
