India white-ball middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer won’t be a part of the six-match series against Sri Lanka as he’s currently undergoing the rehab process from his shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, Iyer stated that he is looking forward to watching the 20 boys play for the national side under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan and head coach Rahul Dravid. The India vs Sri Lanka 2021 series will begin on July 13 with the first ODI played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

While speaking to The Grade Cricketer (TGC) Podcast, the Mumbai-born heaped praises for India’s newly-appointed coach and captain. Shreyas Iyer also recalled his experience during the India A tour where he led the side under Rahul Dravid as head coach.

“Very much excited (for the tour) and I am fairly sure that everybody would be getting a good amount of chances to play in Sri Lanka, even though we are around 20 (guys) who have gone to play,” said Iyer.

Adding further about Dravid, he said: “Playing under Rahul Dravid has been a great experience for me as well in the past. He is an amazing coach. I have played under him for India A and also captained under him. He gives you a lot of freedom as a captain and as a player, he gives a lot of opportunities. He doesn’t put a lot of pressure on you and I feel players going to Sri Lanka will have a blast along with him being the coach and Shikhar Dhawan being the captain.

“Looking forward to seeing Dhawan taking all the tough decisions out there”

After talking about Dravid, the 26-year-old also expressed his excitement to watch Shikhar Dhawan lead the national side for the first time in his career.

“Talking about Shikhar Dhawan, I feel he is a very funny guy and a really good captain. So, I am really looking forward to seeing Shikhar being the captain and taking all the tough decisions out there,” said Iyer.

Shreyas Iyer was last seen in action in the home series against England where he injured his shoulder while fielding during the maiden ODI. Consequently, he missed the first half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and Rishabh Pant was announced as the skipper of Delhi Capitals (DC) in his place.
