The wait of seeing the vintage avatar of MS Dhoni finally came to an end during the first qualifier between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The 40-year-old played a swashbuckling knock of 18* runs off just six deliveries, including 3 fours and a mammoth six.
MSD defied all odds as he promoted himself to bat up the order, ahead of in-form all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo. However, he stayed till the end while ensuring his fans live a classic ‘MS Dhoni knock’ after a reasonably long time. This also marked an end to his struggling form in the ongoing edition of the cash-rich league.
Batting first, the Delhi-based franchise posted a great total of 172/5 on the board at the end of their quota of 20 overs. Opening batter Prithvi Shaw (60) and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant (51*) emerged as the key contributors to their side’s total.
In reply, CSK batters Ruturaj Gaikwad (70) and Robin Uthappa (63) smashed brilliant half-centuries after the early scalp of Faf du Plessis. However, they lost quick wickets in the middle before MSD yet again finished off a game for the three-time IPL champions.
With this win, MS Dhoni’s men have ensured a spot in the final match of IPL 2021. On the other hand, DC will have another chance and play the winner of the eliminator in the second qualifier on October 13.
