Yet another captaincy record awaits to be written by MS Dhoni and this time in the shortest format. As Dhoni gears up for the all-important India Premier League (IPL) 2021 final, it will be his 300th T20 match as captain. The stylish wicket-keeper batsman’s captaincy journey in the format started with the 2007 T20 World Cup triumph and Dhoni has only gotten better with time.
While 300 is a huge milestone, to put the number in perspective no other player has led a team even close to 250 times in the format. Dhoni’s closest mate on the list is Darren Sammy who has led in 209 matches. The West Indian legend is followed by Delhi batsmen Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir who have captained in 185 and 170 matches respectively.
Will MS Dhoni lift his fourth IPl title in his 300th T20 game as captain?
While MS Dhoni is not someone who pays much attention to his personal milestones but his fans sure do. And they will be eager to see the charismatic leader lift the IPL trophy in his 300th T20 match as captain. While the job is almost done, Kolkata Knight Riders’ spinners are the only ones standing between CSK and yet another title.
While the Super Kings are a well-oiled team, KKR’s spinners have been wreaking havoc in the second leg of IPL 2021. If the Men in Yellow manage to negotiate with them, then they will have almost won the game. While all the focus is on the KKR spin trio, their batting, especially the openers have been pretty impressive too.
All in all, MS Dhoni and Co. will have their work cut out for the big final. While the fans are expecting a win from their side, they will also be looking forward to a vintage Mahi show, glimpses of which they saw in the first qualifier. Dhoni has not been in good touch over the last two seasons and will be looking to come to the part all guns blazing on the big day.
