India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to undergo back surgery as per recent reports. He missed the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series and is not a part of the three-match ODI series against Australia.

If he undergoes surgery, then he is expected to be out of action for four to five months, which means he won’t be available for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and may miss the World Test Champion final as well. The one-off showpiece event will take place in June this year against Australia at The Oval in London.

Iyer has been advised to go for surgery. He is keen to get operated on by a specialist in London, but if there’s is a decent option in India, then the surgery could take place here also,” a source told TOI. Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to issue a statement regarding Iyer’s condition.

Iyer had also missed the first Test of the BGT 2023 series due to back issues but made a comeback to the side in the second Test. Prior to the BGT, Iyer missed the New Zealand ODI series as well. He had been battling a back problem after the Bangladesh Test last year.

It’s uncertain whether he will be picked for the ODI World Cup 2023 which will take place in India in October-November. He might not be in the reckoning if he doesn’t play a couple of matches in the build-up to the all-important tournament of the year.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) faced a huge blow as they signed Iyer for 12.25 crore and now have to grind hard to find someone who can lead the team in the absence of Iyer. The Mumbai-born batter was made KKR’s captain during IPL 2022, but the team struggled a lot, ending up seventh on the points table with six wins from 14 matches. In 14 IPL matches last year, Iyer scored 401 runs at a strike rate of 134.56 with the highest being 85.

The two-time champions have roped in Shakib Al Hasan during the auction for IPL 2022 last December. They also have New Zealand skipper Tim Southee, so one of them can be handed the captaincy role.
