India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer complained of back pain during the fourth Test of the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This occurred in the evening on Saturday after Day 3’s play. He did not come out to bat that day, nor did he come on Sunday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) then announced on the morning of Sunday about the recurrence of back issues following which the 24-year-old had gone for scans. The BCCI then said that a “specialist’s opinion will be sought” for his treatment.

“Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” the BCCI statement read.

He has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series and recent reports are suggesting he cannot take part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well. Now Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have to find a new captain for the side. New Zealand skipper Tim Southee or Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan can take the captaincy reigns for the two-time champions this year.

IPL is slated to start on March 31 and for Shreyas Iyer to gain full fitness is nearly impossible. Reports claimed that the National Cricket Academy’s (NCA) medical team may take a decision on whether Iyer will undergo surgery or not. Even if he doesn’t go under the knife, he won’t be rushed into the IPL.

In IPL 2022, Iyer played 14 matches and collected 401 runs at a strike rate of 134.56, with a highest of 85 runs. Overall, in 101 IPL matches, he amassed 2776 runs at 128.36. KKR had a forgetful season in 2022, as they ended up seventh on the points table with just six wins in 14 matches. This year, they will open their campaign on April 1 against Punjab Kings.

Recently, NCA and BCCI made India paceman Jasprit Bumrah go under the knife due to his stress fracture to make him 100 perfect fit before the ICC ODI World Cup later this year in India. They can do the same for Iyer as well because he has good numbers in ODIs.
