WATCH: Henry Nicholls suffers in one of the unluckiest dismissals in cricket history
Henry Nicholls and Daryl Mitchell
In the Test match between England and New Zealand, the latter’s Henry Nicholls got caught out in one of the strangest wickets in the history of cricket on the first day of the third and final match at Headingley. Daryl Mitchell middled Nicholls’ shot and diverted it straight at mid-off fielder. This dismissal will go down in the history of cricket as one of the strangest dismissals.
Nicholls was on 19 from 98 deliveries. After his 99th delivery off Jack Leach, Nicholls advanced down the wicket and drove it emphatically down the ground. He would have been expecting four runs. But the ball, instead of heading towards the boundary ropes at the Football Stand End, made Nicholls watch the ball with horror. Nobody would have predicted what happened next.
It was so quick and created a lot of confusion. The ball zeroed in on the middle of Daryl Mitchell’s bat and he deflected Nicholl’s shot. The ricochet nearly hit the umpire, but he was forced to dive out of the way. The ball then diverted straight to Alex Lees at mid-off. Watch the video below:
“How has it got there?” exclaimed Nasser Hussain on commentary.
“Micthell’s at the non-striker’s end, he’s trying to get his bat out of the way, the umpire’s trying to get out of the way…and Mitchell’s middled it straight to mid-off.
“I cannot believe that, I really can’t.”
Law 33.2.2.3 states that it will be out if a fielder catches the ball after it has touched the wicket, an umpire, another fielder, a runner or the other batter.

Eng vs NZ match so far
New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who recovered from COVID-19, won the toss and opted to bat first. As Nicholls walked back in disbelief, England could finally break the 40-run stand between the fifth wicket after Leech dismissing him and New Zealand got left 123 for five at tea.
On Day 1, New Zealand scored 255/5 with Mitchell and Tom Blundell playing at 78* and 45*. England is leading the three-match Test series by 2-0 and is looking towards a white-wash.
