A video of former India skipper MS Dhoni‘s practicing in nets ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 has gone viral. During IPL 2022, the 41-year-old said that he will don the yellow jersey of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) once again.

Definitely. It’s a simple reason: it will be unfair to not play in Chennai and say thank you [to the fans]. Mumbai is one place where, as a team and as an individual, I have got a lot of love and affection. But it wouldn’t be nice to the CSK fans,” Dhoni had said during IPL 2022. And as he can be seen in the viral video, getting enough training, CSK fans are assured to see him play this year.

Watch the video below:

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chairman Sourav Ganguly confirmed that IPL 2023 will be a home-and-away format. Dhoni last played in Chepauk Stadium back in 2019.

Fans were shocked when Dhoni stepped down from the leadership role just a couple of days before the start of IPL 2022. Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was asked to lead the team, but under him, CSK had a below-par season. Jadeja only captained the team in the first half of the tournament and relinquished the captaincy. Dhoni stepped up again for the second half.

The second-most successful team in IPL, CSK, could manage just four wins out of 14 matches for the first time in IPL history. Even five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) faced the same result. The two teams were at the bottom of the points table.

CSK roped in Ben Stokes at the mini-auction held on December 23 in Kochi. The team’s major concern is finding a new skipper as in all possibilities, Dhoni will be playing his last IPL season this year. As they have spent the third highest amount, a whopping Rs 16.25 crore on Stokes, the English Test skipper is likely to lead the yellow franchise from 2024.

Under Dhoni, CSK lifted the trophy four times in IPL (2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021). They are just behind Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians who won the tournament five times.
